About This Real Time NPI Registry

What is an NPI?
NPI stands for National Provider Identifier. The NPI is a unique identification number for health providers. NPIs were introduced by HIPAA which stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. In 1996, the HIPAA act mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for all health providers and health plans. Prior to NPIs, many health providers used other identifiers such as UPINs. Those are now discontinued.
Why might I need an NPI?
If you bill insurance companies or government payers, you will need an NPI. The purpose of the HIPAA is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) developed the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to assign these unique identifiers.
Do I need to apply for a new NPI when I change jobs?
In short, no. By definition, the NPI is a national number. However, some of the data fields associated with your NPI are employer-related. So, you should update that information. Contact NPPES to do so.
Why this site?
Although NPIs are basically required by those doing business in the United States, CMS has not historically made it easy to find the needed NPI information. This site enables those searching for NPI information to find it quickly and reliably.
